What is Neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is a specialist area of psychology that focuses on the diagnosis and management of conditions that impact brain function. Generally speaking, it blends knowledge from both neurology and psychology to examine how the brain affects everyday functioning.

Neuropsychologists are trained to understand the cognitive (i.e. thinking), emotional and behavioural effects of a wide range of brain conditions. For example, this includes a vast range of developmental (e.g. ADHD, autism), neurological (e.g. stroke, traumatic brain injury) and psychological (e.g. trauma, depression) conditions.

By evaluating brain function through using highly specialised tests, neuropsychologists help clarify diagnoses, provide treatment recommendations, and develop personalised strategies to support individuals in daily life, work, and study.

Why should I see a Neuropsychologist?

Typically, people undergo neuropsychological testing if they suspect an underlying neurodiversity (e.g. ADHD, autism) or they are experiencing changes in cognitive functioning (e.g. memory, attention), behaviour or personality.

A neuropsychological evaluation also assists with diagnostic clarification and can provide a more comprehensive understanding of one’s condition.

They are also helpful when applying for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), as a neuropsychological evaluation provides objective evidence of cognitive difficulties that may impact daily functioning.

A neuropsychologist will also provide recommendations for managing cognitive challenges at school, home or work.
